Experience the unbelievable – Successful discharge of a preterm baby

Baby of Monira Begum & Md. Sayeed Anwar from Bangladesh was a preterm born at 30 weeks of pregnancy at Bhagirathi Neotia Woman and Child Care Centre, New Town (BNWCCC, NT) as compared to a normal time of 37 to 40 weeks. As the Mother had a rupture of the bag of membranes ( a hole or tear in the sac that protects the fetus) very early in pregnancy around 22 weeks.

This leads to two major concerns of pulmonary hypoplasia (underdeveloped lungs as the water stimulates lung development) and the risk of infection in the growing fetus. Due to Pulmonary hypoplasia, the baby immediately after birth was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit under the supervision of Dr. Bikramjit Das (Neonatologist & NICU In-charge at BNWCCC, NT) as she required prolonged ventilation and oxygen, this kind of baby has delicate lungs and often can’t handle the high pressures associated with conventional ventilation and hence may require advanced modes like high-frequency ventilation which was given at BNWCCC, NT. Also, the baby was given certain medicines to normalize her cardiac functions and also associated with pulmonary hypertension. The baby also has the chance of contracting hospital-acquired infections due to prolonged stay but with proper management, intensive monitoring round the clock by the skilled doctors and trained nursing staff, the baby didn’t acquire any such infection, the baby was stable and later discharged. Here we are glad to hear her parents – Monira Begum & Md. Sayeed Anwar shares their baby’s story of the successful recovery against all odds and makes us happy to bring back the lost smile on the couple’s face. We wish them a very happy & healthy life ahead.
